Sleaze Land – A Prologue “A piece of happiness should never be taken as due.” Charlaine Harris “Why are you sitting there in the dark with your fangs in?” The man with the expensive dye-job just sighed and then sucked on a fang. “You realize you’re never gonna be that vampire again, don’t you? I mean, for Christ’s sake - you gotta move on.” “And you realize you’re not even close to a convincible blonde. And yet, still… you persist.” The petite woman with the ego ten-times larger than her intellect just stared at her husband and co-host. “We go on in fifteen, be ready,” she said, with a fake Southern drawl, that was not for a one-second believable. The man sighed again, and then sucked even louder on one of his fake fangs. “What?” the woman intoned, as if asking were only slightly less annoying than finally calling the divorce lawyer she had on retainer. “I just think we ought to be doing more, is all.” “More about what?” the snarky, fake-blonde asked, with an equally-false sense of superiority she’d grown all-too accustomed to. “You know… to expose what’s really going on,” the man said, as he swiveled around in his one-of-a-kind Montestro chair (complete with built-in ottoman) that cost more than most mid-westerner’s homes did. “Look, sweetie,” the woman went on, with her fake accent. “It’s this simple, we expose just enough to show the world we’re better than that. I mean, how else are we gonna make such outrageous money – than by exploiting the very problem our entire industry creates.” The man looked around their large home, and thought about all of the cars and vacations and other luxury items he’d lose if he had to work an actual job. “I mean, for fuck’s sake. Do you want to go back to making what an average fuckin’ person makes?” The man gloomily shook his head. “Well, good, then,” his made-for-TV wife said, as she tussled his hair, and then walked out the door. A moment later, the short man with the even shorter attention span removed his false fangs and set them on the hand-carved marble table that sat next to him, cuz somehow – they no longer felt so reassuring. © Raena Exe 2021 *Inspired by life. *All characters, places, and events are completely fictional. *All rights reserved.
